Takuma Sato pocketed a prize of $2,458,129 (£1.9m) for winning the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

Sato was crowned Indy's first Japanese winner when he took the lead of the 500-mile race with just six laps remaining, to finish just 0.2011s ahead of three-time winner Helio Castroneves.

Castroneves earned $770,629 (£601,000) for finishing second, whilst third-placed rookie Ed Jones took home a total of $535,629 (£685,000).

The total prize fund of $13,178,359 (£10.2m) was split between all 33 drivers, with the amount depending on qualifying and race position.
