Indianapolis 500 pole-sitter Scott Dixon escaped injury after a massive accident on Lap 53 of the 200-lap race.
Dixon became airborne when he struck the rear of Jay Howard's #77 car, which moments before struck the wall after running wide at Turn 1 and ran across the track into Dixon's path.
Dixon then landed on the SAFER barrier on the inside wall, tearing down part of the catch fencing which required a lengthy repair under red flag conditions before the race could be restarted.
Both Dixon and Howard walked away from the crash, whilst a photographer nearby was taken to the medical centre for checks.
Helio Castroneves was almost collected, but managed to avoid the crash by dipping to the inside, where he drove under the airborne Dixon.
