Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli will bring the Supersoft, Soft and Medium compounds to the British Grand Prix – a softer step compared to its choice in recent seasons.
The Hard tyre has typically been selected in order to cope with the high-speed demands of the Silverstone layout, but Pirelli’s more durable 2017-spec rubber has prompted a re-think.
The orange-banded Hard tyre was taken to the Spanish Grand Prix, but was used only sparingly during the opening practice session, with drivers critical of the decision to bring the compound.
Pirelli has now shelved plans to bring the Hard compound to Silverstone, with the Supersoft, Soft and Mediums tyres to be available.
Of the 13 sets of tyres available to drivers, one set of either the Softs or Mediums must be used for one stint of the Grand Prix, while one set of the Supersofts must be saved for use only in Q3.
For the remaining 10 sets, drivers will be permitted free choice of compound make-up.
