Roush Fenway Racing driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr put in a last-lap move on Kyle Busch to claim his first NASCAR Cup win at Talladega.
In his 158th start in the series, Stenhouse snatched the lead away from Busch in overtime to narrowly claim victory in an action-packed final stage of the race.
He started from pole position but dropped as far back as 20th early on, in order to clear debris from the radiator of his No.17 Ford, before steadily making up ground.
However, Stenhouse was brought back into contention after a crash with 28 laps to go which damaged 18 cars – sparked by Chase Elliott being spun around by AJ Allmendinger.
The red flags emerged and the race was stopped, and when it got going again, it was Busch who led from his Joe Gibbs Racing team-mate and stage two winner Denny Hamlin.
Stenhouse moved up to fourth through two further cautions in the final laps, leading to the race going into overtime for the final restart – where he snatched the lead away from Busch.
He finished 0.095 seconds clear of Jamie McMurray, who beat Busch to the runner-up spot, with Aric Almirola in fourth place – although he could face penalties for failing post-race inspections.
Kasey Kahne moved up to fifth by the finish and Kurt Busch was sixth. Brad Keselowski won stage one and was a contender for much of the race but claimed seventh.
Jimmie Johnson finished in eighth place, with Paul Menard and David Ragan completing the top 10.
