McLaren junior Lando Norris overhauled Carlin team-mate Jehan Daruvala at the first FIA European Formula 3 race of the weekend at Monza to win his second race of the 2017 season.
Norris lined up on the front row but a poor start meant he lost ground, with polesitter and Force India protégé Daruvala eking out a comfortable lead in the early laps.
Straight-lining the second chicane meant Norris was left with work to do in fourth, but he got through Prema rival Callum Ilott and team-mate Jake Dennis to begin his hunt of Daruvala, who had stretched two-seconds clear up front.
Just past the half-way mark, Norris started to close in on Daruvala’s advantage and was all over the back of his team-mate’s car within the space of a few laps.
Norris dived up the inside at Turn 1 to snatch the lead, but Daruvala kept with Norris all the way to the chequered flag.
Norris therefore took victory, with Daruvala second and Ferdinand Habsburg in third, having just held off Joel Eriksson, who arrived at Monza as title leader but is now level on points with Norris.
The Prema drivers were involved in an almost race-long battle for a top five spot, with Guanyu Zhou eventually finishing ahead of Mick Schumacher and Maximilian Gunther.
Ralf Aron was eighth for Hitech, just ahead of Ilott, who dropped back as the race progressed, while Jake Hughes rounded out the top 10.
Having challenged for the win at the start of the race and been in contention for a podium, Dennis eventually slipped back and retired with a few laps remaining, having received a nudge under braking for Turn 1.
