Lewis Hamilton says a race in New York should definitely be on the Formula 1 calendar following news that new owners Liberty Media is pushing for a revival of the failed New Jersey event.
F1 CEO Chase Carey recently said a race in New York was a "priority" and former boss Bernie Ecclestone says he has put Carey's team in touch with the organisers of the proposed street race in New Jersey, which was supposed to debut on the calendar in 2013.
Ecclestone however believes the chances of reviving the event are slim.
"I'd be surprised if they got New Jersey off the ground," said the F1 chairman emeritus. "Because it’s very complicated.
"But I put them in touch with the people we were originally dealing with, with the cities and everything. So everything’s there on a plate."
Asked about the race, Hamilton backed the idea, although he doesn't believe it has to be a night race as suggested by F1 director of motorsports, Ross Brawn.
"Racing in New York? That would be cool! A New York Grand Prix is definitely a race that we should have on the calendar," he told the official F1 site.
"F1 should have a minimum of two races in the US – and one being New York would be just amazing. It is such a fantastic city and racing in New Jersey with the New York skyline as a backdrop – it can’t get better.
"Who says that it must be a night race? Driving into the sunset would be absolutely awesome, as this time of the day is one of the best moments in the Big Apple!"
