Turkey's Istanbul Park could return to the Formula 1 calendar as soon as next year after new Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey met with the country's president to discuss the matter.

Turkey last hosted a race in 2011 before a financial dispute saw the contract cancelled. However a potential deal to revive the race was discussed on Tuesday between Carey and president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Also present at the meeting were track operator Vural Ak, Turkey's motorsport governing body chief Serkan Yazici, and minister of youth and sports Akif Cagatay Kilic.

Although no deal was signed during the discussion, it's reported a return to Istanbul Park was "agreed in principle" according to Ak.

"We had a meeting in Ankara earlier today with the President and Chase Carey from Liberty Media, whom I previously invited to Turkey personally before," he added.

“All I can say at this point is that the meetings went really well and we agreed in principle [a return]. Although the contract hasn't been signed yet."

Should Turkey rejoin the calendar next yearm, it would see a record-breaking 22-events, despite the loss of Malaysia, with the addition of France and Germany confirmed.
