Reigning world champion Marc Márquez set the quickest time during the opening day of MotoGP’s second pre-season test at Phillip Island.
Repsol Honda rider Márquez, who clinched his third title in the premier class in 2016, posted a time of 1:29.497 to finish 0.186s clear of Yamaha rival Valentino Rossi at the home of the Australian Grand Prix.
Suzuki’s Andrea Iannone moved up to third late on, shuffling Yamaha's Maverick Viñales down to fourth, while Cal Crutchlow wound up fifth for LCR Honda.
Pramac’s Danilo Petrucci was the fastest Ducati rider in sixth, 0.765s off the pace, as he completed the most mileage, posting his best effort on his 88th and final lap.
Those late improvements by others demoted Dani Pedrosa to seventh, with Andrea Dovizioso eighth for Ducati, in front of Marc VDS’ Jack Miller, acting as the team's sole representative due to the absence of the injured Tito Rabat.
Tech 3 rookie Jonas Folger completed the top 10, with Ducati's Jorge Lorenzo ending the opening day down in 11th position.
Aleix Espargaró was the highest-placed Aprilia-backed Gresini rider in 14th spot, while newcomer KTM continued its work with Pol Espargaró finishing 17th, 1.7s adrift of Márquez.
