Andreas Mikkelsen’s future in the World Rally Championship remains unclear after he lodged an entry into the WRC2 class of the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally.
Mikkelsen finished third across each of the past three years while competing for Volkswagen, taking three victories, including two in 2016.
However, Mikkelsen was left without a seat when Volkswagen announced its decision to withdraw from the sport at the end of 2016.
Mikkelsen will instead enter the curtain-raiser in a Skoda Fabia R5 for Skoda Motorsport in the secondary class.
“The consequence of Volkswagen withdrawing from the championship is that all the WRC seats were already taken,” explained Mikkelsen.
“Therefore, my 2017 season will be all about keeping my rally-overall warm and finding a seat in the right team to be able to fight for the WRC champion title in 2018.
“We don’t know what the upcoming season will bring yet. But of course I hope to get to drive as much as possible and we are working on a plan to do selected rallies.”
