Sebastian Vettel has been voted ‘Driver of the Day’ for the 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after finishing in third place.

The German driver started in fifth and held position early on, before going onto a different strategy to his rivals.

With fresh super-softs for the final part of the race, he quickly closed in on his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, passing him and latching onto the back of the Red Bulls.

After picking off Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, Vettel took on eventual champion Nico Rosberg for second place.

But despite several attempts, Vettel couldn’t get ahead of the Mercedes driver and ended the race in third place.

The ‘Driver of the Day’ is voted for by the fans, opening mid-way through the race and finishing at the chequered flag.

Lewis Hamilton took victory, but his tactics of backing Rosberg up into the pack failed and he had to settle for second in the championship.

Second place for Rosberg was good enough for him to score his first F1 title.

2016 Driver of the Day:

Australia – Romain Grosjean

Bahrain – Romain Grosjean

China – Daniil Kvyat

Russia – Kevin Magnussen

Spain – Max Verstappen

Monaco – Sergio Pérez

Canada – Max Verstappen

Azerbaijan – Sergio Pérez

Austria – Max Verstappen

Britain – Max Verstappen

Hungary – Kimi Räikkönen

Germany – Daniel Ricciardo

Belgium – Lewis Hamilton

Italy – Nico Rosberg

Singapore – Sebastian Vettel
