Jake Hughes heads British 1-2 in final race of 2016

DAMS driver Jake Hughes took victory in Sunday's GP3 sprint race, just ahead of compatriot Jack Aitken, bringing down the curtain on the seventh season of the junior category.

Hughes took the lead at the first corner, as reverse-grid pole-sitter Konstantin Tereschenko squabbled with Nirei Fukuzuki, and was able to control the pace thereafter.

With the title won by Charles Leclerc on Saturday, Sunday's race was a chance for the field to have one last bit of fun before the winter break.

For 2016 runner-up Alexander Albon, however, that was not the case, as the ART driver crashed with Arden's Tatiana Calderon on the opening lap, prompting a safety car.

After the restart on lap 3, Hughes set about building a gap, leading Aitken by just under two seconds at the chequered flag. It was the Briton's second win of the season, wth Aitken taking his sixth podium in eight races, a very strong end to the season.

Nirei Fukuzumi completed the podium for ART, followed by fastest lap-setter Jake Dennis, then Alex Palou, Tereschenko and Steijn Schothorst, with Kevin Joerg completing the points in eighth.

Series champion Charles Leclerc finished just outside the points in ninth after starting P17, meaning none of the three championship contenders scored a single point during races over the final weekend of the season; Leclerc's points for pole position the only change in the final tally. Giuliano Alesi rounded out the top ten.
