Prema Powerteam's Pierre Gasly has all-but evened up the points in the GP2 standings with pole position for the feature race in Abu Dhabi.
The Frenchman was over three tenths faster than next-best Sergey Sirotkin in the ART machine, posting a time of 1:47.476 to take pole in the final qualifying session of the year.
This gives him four points, and reduces the gap to team mate and series points leader Antonio Giovinazzi – who qualified sixth – to just three points.
Gasly waited for a clear track in the session, heading out later than everyone else and setting his pole time on a virtually empty Yas Marina Circuit.
Behind Gasly and Sirotkin were Artem Markelov, McLaren protege Nobuharu Matsushita, and Oliver Rowland.
Giovinazzi will line up ahead of Norman Nato, with Raffaele Marciello, who is still mathematically in the title fight, eighth on the grid for Russian Time.
Alex Lynn and Mitch Evans round out the top ten, with series debutants Louis Deletraz and Emil Bernstorff 20th and 22nd respectively.
