Hilmer Motorsport has announced its intensions to return to the GP2 series in 2017, having last raced in the series at Monza in 2015.

The German team joined GP2 in 2013, having replaced Ocean Racing Technology, and scored four wins thanks to Robin Frijns, Jon Lancaster and Adrian Quaife-Hobbs.

Having partnered up with the Force India F1 team and being signed as one of the teams for the 2014-2016 GP2 seasons, Hilmer suffered a tough second year in the feeder championship.

Hilmer failed to put a full season together in 2015 and raced for the final time at Monza, ending the year at the bottom of the teams’ championship.

“We want to return to the podium as quickly as possible," said team boss Franz Hilmer. “Talks with drivers who are keen on winning and who want to succeed together with us have begun.

“The GP2 is the benchmark for everyone who is fighting for a factory contract in the professional motorsport business.”

It has also partnered up with businessman Maik Schiede, who will help Hilmer in running the team.

He explained: “I think that we can put together a strong and young team under the aspect of diligence and meticulous work for success.

“The challenges in GP2 in 2017 and especially beyond require it; we will gear ourselves up for it.”
