Juan Pablo Montoya has accepted an offer to compete in the Indianapolis 500 with Penske on a one-race deal, having been dropped from the team's line-up in favour of Josef Newgarden.
The Colombian will not compete in the IndyCar Series next year after being replaced by Newgarden, but has accepted an offer to race a fifth Penske entry during the next edition of the Indianapolis 500, team president Tim Cindric confirmed to Autosport.
"I'm pleasantly surprised that he took the Indy-only offer," commented Cindric. "We were really honest with each other about what our different goals were and for a period it didn't align but I think this is a good situation for both of us.
"His first reaction was he wanted to run a full season with someone. He didn't want to leave the team but wanted to see what else was out there.
"At the end of last week he told me the best opportunity was to run Indy with Team Penske so if the offer still stood that is what he wanted to do."
The addition of a fifth car sees Montoya line-up against Simon Pagenaud, Will Power, Helio Castroneves and Newgarden in what will be Penske's biggest Indy 500 line-up ever.
