Ducati MotoGP rider Andrea Dovizioso stormed to pole position for the Malaysian Grand Prix in wet conditions at the Sepang International Circuit.
The Italian put in two laps quick enough for pole during the final Q2 session, with his last improvement of a 2m11.485 snatching him first place on the grid.
After a dry third practice session, conditions were damp for qualifying after rain between the two sessions.
It’s Dovizioso’s second pole position of the 2016 MotoGP season, with the Yamaha duo of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo two and a half tenths further back.
This year’s world champion Marc Marquez was fourth fastest in qualifying, while Cal Crutchlow – who set the pace in Q1 and recovered from a fall – was fifth.
Dovizioso’s team-mate Andrea Iannone took sixth on his return from injury, with Suzuki’s riders Aleix Espargaro and Maverick Vinales next up.
Alvero Bautista and Loris Baz completed the top 10, ahead of returning Avintia rider Hector Barbera and Tech 3’s Pol Espargaro.
Bradley Smith found himself down in 13th, just 0.009 seconds clear of Jack Miller. Stefan Bradl recovered from a fall to take 16th, just behind Danilo Petrucci.
