Max Verstappen has won the Driver of the Day award for the United States Grand Prix despite failing to finish the race.
The Dutch driver qualified in fourth place but lost a position to Kimi Raikkonen at the start. He was slowly recovering ground until he made an unscheduled pitstop.
He surprised his Red Bull team, owning up to the error afterwards, and retired a few laps later with a gearbox problem.
Formula 1 changed the Driver of the Day award mid-way through the season, opening the fan voting at the halfway mark and closing it at the chequered flag.
It’s the seventh time Verstappen has won the award, following victories in Spain, Canada, Austria, Britain, Malaysia and Japan.
