Vinales secures maiden MotoGP victory at Silverstone

Maverick Vinales scored his first victory in the MotoGP series at Silverstone, ending Suzuki’s nine-year win-less streak.

He lined up in third place for the British Grand Prix after a strong qualifying effort in tricky conditions, behind pole-sitter Cal Crutchlow and Valentino Rossi.

Vinales moved into the lead at the start, quickly pulling out a gap over those behind him before the race was stopped.

This was due to a heavy crash at Maggotts between Pol Espargaro and Loris Baz. At the second start Crutchlow led away but Vinales soon found himself out front.

He soon built up a sizeable lead, proving to be unbeatable at Silverstone. Vinales crossed the line to score his maiden MotoGP win and Suzuki’s first in many years.

Crutchlow had to hold off the Hondas and Ducatis, as well as Rossi, before emerging in second place at the chequered flag.

Rossi finished in third place. Marc Marquez ran wide late on at Stowe but recovered to fourth, after passing his team-mate Dani Pedrosa.

Andrea Dovizioso was sixth for Ducati, with team-mate Andrea Iannone crashing out at Luffield while battling at the front.

Aleix Espargaro was seventh, ahead of Jorge Lorenzo – who had a low-key run – and Danilo Petrucci. Alvaro Bautista completed the top 10.
