Ferrari have been a ‘great disappointment’ in 2016 says Mark Webber

Mark Webber has described Ferrari's season so far a "great disappointment" as so much was promised, but so little delivered as the team has struggled to make an impact on Mercedes' dominance.

The Australian believes it is in fact Red Bull that has closed in on Mercedes, rather than Ferrari, but is adamant the Anglo-German outfit still has an advantage over its rivals making it "unbeatable" on most days.

"They’re [Red Bull] making up ground on Mercedes," Webber, a former Red Bull driver, told Auto Bild. "But I don’t see that they have really caught up.

"They have a good race here and there, but Mercedes is usually still unbeatable. But Red Bull is ahead of Ferrari."

Turning his attention to Ferrari where his former team-mate Sebastian Vettel now resides, Webber described the team's results a "great disappointment" as they've struggled to put any pressure on Mercedes and recently fell behind Red Bull in the standings.

"Sebastian and Kimi [Raikkonen] are doing what they can," he added. "They’re protecting the team a lot in the media, but inside they’ll know that the team needs to get better.

"Every week they not been able to make the most of their potential with penalties or strategy mistakes, it’s frustrating for the drivers."

When asked if Vettel can lead the team to success, he said: "There’s no doubt he can. But he needs the right people and I’m not sure if they have them at the moment.

"Ferrari is under constant media pressure, always needing to deliver. You can see with Sebastian that it can be frustrating, but his experience will help him."
