Lewis Hamilton takes commanding Hockenheim win as Red Bull complete podium

Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead to 19 points on Sunday at the German Grand Prix as he claimed his sixth win of the 2016 season.

The Briton got a brilliant start to immediately take the lead at Turn 1 ahead of pole sitter and Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg, who had a poor getaway to drop down to fourth behind both Red Bulls.

Max Verstappen would get ahead of Daniel Ricciardo at the start but as their different strategies played out, Ricciardo would finish ahead to claim second, with Verstappen completing the podium.

Rosberg finished a distant fourth – 15 seconds adrift of the lead – at his home race, with a five-second penalty for forcing Verstappen off track during an overtake at the hairpin compounding a poor day for the German.

The Ferraris looked as though they might keep tabs with the leading pack in the early stages, but began to drop off as the race progressed, eventually finishing fifth and sixth with Sebastian Vettel leading Kimi Raikkonen.

Nico Hulkenberg was seventh for Force India ahead of the McLaren of Jenson Button, the Williams of Valtteri Bottas and the Sergio Perez completing the top ten after a last-lap pass on Fernando Alonso.

Alonso would finish 12th after losing two places on the final lap, as Haas' Esteban Gutierrez sailed past in the final few corners.

The fairly mundane race saw just two retirements, with Felipe Massa making contact with Jolyon Palmer at the start. Although the Brazilian continued, he lacked pace and dropped down the order before retiring the car.

Felipe Nasr was the second retirement, stopping on-track with a yet-to-be diagnosed problem.
