Jake Hughes took his first GP3 series race win on Sunday at the Hockenheimring after a well-timed overtake gave him the advantage during a Virtual Safety Car period.
The DAMS driver passed Arjun Maini just as the Virtual Safety Car was deployed for a collision between Ralph Boschung and Arthur Janosz, with the latter driver crashing out at the stadium section. With Hughes and Maini side-by-side as the VSC began, the Brit made the move for the lead.
He was under investigation for allegedly overtaking under the VSC, but was cleared of any wrongdoing when it was shown that there was no indication of caution in the part of the track where the move was made.
Maini looked like he might have had the pace to challenge for the lead, but a disastrous restart dropped the Indian down to sixth after his third front-row start in as many GP3 sprint races.
After that, Hughes was able to control the gap to second place. The second step on the rostrum, much like in Saturday's feature race, was decided late on in the race, and again it was Charles Leclerc who looked set to take it. However, a penultimate lap move by Jack Aitken relegated the ART driver to third, and made it a British 1-2.
Hughes, Aitken and Leclerc were chased by Haas test driver Santino Ferrucci, the recovering Maini, Jake Dennis, Matt Parry, and Nyck de Vries, who picked up the final point. Tatiana Calderon finished ninth, just three tenths away from repeating the feat of Saturday's race where she took her first ever point in the series, and Kevin Joerg rounded out the top 10.
Janosz and Boschung were joined on the sidelines by former series leader Alexander Albon. With the Thai driver scoring no points, Charles Leclerc now leads the championship.
