Lewis Hamilton delivers British GP pole despite losing Q3 lap to track limits rule

Lewis Hamilton secured a dominant pole position for the British Grand Prix, beating team-mate Nico Rosberg by more than three-tenths to start his home race from the top spot.

The Briton came under pressure to deliver in Q3 after his first time was deleted for exceeding track limits, leaving him with one shot at pole, whilst Rosberg sat comfortably at the top of the times.

With the clock ticking down, Hamilton headed out for his second run and delivered a 1:29.287, just shy of his Q2 time which was a new lap record around the current Silverstone layout.

Rosberg seemingly had no answer for his team-mates pace, finishing second ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. The gap behind the Mercedes more than a second.

Verstappen celebrated his first qualifying session ahead of team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, with three-tenths between the Red Bull duo.

Kimi Raikkonen was fifth, but narrowly escaped the grasps of Q2 when he made an error on his first lap, spinning at the penultimate corner, and then ran wide on his second. He scraped through with a third and final attempt.

Ferrari team-mate Sebastian Vettel qualified sixth, but will start P11 after taking on a new gearbox and thus a grid penalty.

That promotes Valtteri Bottas, Carlos Sainz, Nico Hulkenberg – who had been eighth until his quickest lap was deleted after the checkered flag, dropping him behind Sainz – Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez, tenth.

Jenson Button will start down in 17th after failing to escape Q1. The Briton climbed out of his McLaren, but was seen sprinting back after Kevin Magnussen's quickest lap was investigated for going wide, which would have seen Button elevated to the second session, only for the lap to be cleared.

Marcus Ericsson didn't partake in the session following his final practice crash, as he was required to attend hospital for checks, whilst his car was beyond repair in the time given.
