Sebastien Buemi has been crowned 2015/2016 Formula E champion after the title race went down to the fastest lap, while Nicolas Prost stormed to a dominant second victory of the London ePrix weekend.
Prost took a clear win at Battersea Park, making it a clean-sweep for the French driver. He benefitted from a dramatic first lap where title rivals Buemi and Lucas di Grassi collided.
Buemi led the field into Turn 3 from pole position but di Grassi, who was battling Prost for second, went straight into the back of the e.Dams Renault car.
Both made it back to the pits and swapped to their second cars. They were level on points heading into the race and with fastest lap worth two points, it decided the title.
Through numerous safety cars, Buemi and di Grassi headed out on track and pitted, trying to find a gap and clean air. Buemi ended up putting in a 1m24.150 late on to claim fastest lap, the two points and the title.
Prost finished 7.6 seconds clear of Daniel Abt to clinch e.Dams Renault the teams’ title, with Jean-Eric Vergne finishing third for the second consecutive race.
However, his car was on 0% battery as he crossed the line and a penalty drops him to seventh. Nick Heidfeld and Antonio Felix da Costa, who finished fourth and fifth, also had no energy left and fell to eighth and ninth.
This promoted Jerome d’Ambrosio to third place, despite finishing sixth. Loic Duval battled closely with his Dragon Racing team-mate and was classified in the end in fourth.
Stephane Sarrazin and Bruno Senna moved up to fifth and sixth, with Vergne, Heidfeld and da Costa next up after their respective penalties. Nelson Piquet Jr. finished 10th after losing ground late on, as did his team-mate Oliver Turvey who finished 11th.
Ma Qing Hua was 12th and Mike Conway finished 13th after stopping late on, but managing to continue. Di Grassi and Buemi were classified as retirements despite going for the fastest lap battle.
Robin Frijns failed to finish after an incident with Duval, while Simona de Silvestro and Sam Bird retiring due to issues.
