Ralph Boschung took his first ever GP3 series win on Sunday for Koiranen GP in sodden conditions at the Red Bull Ring.
Barely three laps were completed under racing conditions, with the first nine laps completed under the Safety Car, as well as two subsequent periods for incidents.
Two drivers were lost in the initial Safety Car period; Nirei Fukuzumi stopped on-track in his ART car, and though he was able to get the car going again, he retired in the pit line at the end of the lap. Richard Gonda also stopped part way round the track on lap 7.
The action got under way properly on Lap 10, when the Safety Car pulled in to the pits, but would return just two laps later.
Jake Hughes resumed the race on Lap 10 in the lead, but was tagged by Matthew Parry behind him. This sent Hughes wide and dropped Parry down the order, promoting Boschung to the lead. Konstantin Tereschenko also went off, but retired in the gravel trap.
With the Russian off the track, the Safety Car was deployed on Lap 12, coming back in on Lap 14. However, this green flag period lasted barely the distance of the first sector.
Charles Leclerc hit the back of Tatiana Calderon on the way up to Turn 2, then clipped the back of Jake Dennis, effectively ending the race of both Arden drivers, with Calderon retiring on the spot and Dennis crawling back to the pits. Leclerc also retired; a huge reversal of fortune from his race victory on Saturday.
That was the last piece of racing action, and Boschung closed the race behind the Safety Car. He was joined on the podium by Alex Albon and Antonio Fuoco. Then it was Nyck de Vries, Jack Aitken, Hughes, Parry, and Sandy Sturvik completed the points.
