Lewis Hamilton takes Austria pole from Nico Hulkenberg and Jenson Button

Lewis Hamilton will start the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix from pole position after beating Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg by more than half a second in a damp final session.

The Briton posted a 1m07.922s as he made a late switch from intermediate tyres to slicks as the track dried in the closing stages following a short rain shower during Q2.

Rosberg, although second, will drop five places following his final practice crash which forced the team to change his gearbox. He will therefore start seventh.

That promotes third placed Nico Hulkenberg to the front row alongside Hamilton.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was fourth quickest, but like Rosberg, will drop five places to ninth, promoting McLaren's Jenson Button to third.

Button managed to sneak through to Q3 by just a few tenths and then made the most of his first Q3 appearance in 2016 to go fifth quickest, two seconds down on Hamilton.

Kimi Raikkonen was sixth fastest ahead of Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and the Williams of Valtteri Bottas eighth. Max Verstappen and Felipe Massa completed the top ten.

Haas' Esteban Gutierrez will start P11 ahead of Manor's Pascal Wehrlein, with the German securing his best ever grid position and Manor's first Q2 appearance of the season.

Carlos Sainz, 15th, suffered an engine failure and failed to post a lap time, but starts ahead of Force India's Sergio Perez following a suspension failure for the Mexican.

Another driver to suffer a suspension failure was Daniil Kvyat. The Russian driver ended up in the barriers and caused a red flag as his car was cleared away.
