Nico Rosberg's championship ambitions took a huge hit in Canada as Lewis Hamilton's second win of the season closed the gap between the two to just nine points, with Rosberg finished a disappointing fifth.
The Mercedes driver made contact with his team-mate at the first corner after both got poor starts to drop behind Sebastian Vettel, who took the lead. Hamilton forced Rosberg to run across the grass as he closed the door and took the racing line.
After the race, Rosberg said he was "pissed off" that the move didn't work in his favour and led to him dropping down the order to tenth, a position he had to fight back from, whilst a slow puncture and spin delayed his progress.
"Tough sort of sums it up," Rosberg said. "Sebastian had a great start, I had a decent one and Lewis had a really bad one. I was where my position was [second], on the outside [going into Turn 1], you know.
"In Barcelona, I gave it a go around the outside of Lewis and it worked out really well. I went for the same again today and he did a really hard racing manoeuvre.
"We touched, I was off and that's it. I was very pissed off at that moment. It's my job to make sure that I'm in front after a battle like that next time.
"Of course it was very costly for me, because I lose a lot of places, and from then it was an uphill battle, trying to fight back, and it was difficult with fuel – I nearly ran out."
Rosberg summed his race up as "frustrating" as he couldn't pass Red Bull's Max Verstappen due to fuel saving, and during a last-minute attempt to overtake, he lost control and span at the final chicane.
"Max did a very good job to defend, but then I had to drop back, save fuel and try again," he explained.
"In the end it went completely pear-shaped for me, when I spun around or whatever, though I managed to carry it home still. But it was a frustrating race, of course."
