Ferrari need to understand what went wrong in Spain – Vettel

Sebastian Vettel is unsure why Ferrari were so slow in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix after looking close during practice on Friday and Saturday morning.

The German will start seventh, behind team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, after qualifying more than 1.3 seconds down on the leading Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton.

Speaking to reporters after the session, Vettel said it was important for Ferrari to understand why they looked to competitive before qualifying, but were unable to carry that form through to the session.

"I don't know what happened this afternoon," he said. "We are disappointed as a team today because we didn't deliver what we can, we need to have a look and understand. We can't change it now."

Vettel is confident of making up places on Sunday though, particularly at the start where Ferrari have proved superior to their rivals.

"Tomorrow is another day, we know that the car is strong, we know that the car can be very strong, we just need to make sure that we get it in the right groove.

"There's the start and there's a long race, there are a lot of laps," he added. "For sure, lap one is important, but there's a whole race after that. I'll try to go a lot further than that and see what we can do.

"I think the car should be a lot quicker tomorrow."
