The World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) has given Pirelli the go-ahead to begin testing its 2017 tyres during the current season, as it gears up for major changes next year.
Pirelli put forward plans earlier this week, demanding 25 days of in-season testing with current 2016-spec cars, otherwise it would be forced to walk away from the sport.
Those plans were approved on Monday during an initial vote and have now been given the final green-light by the WMSC.
"The World Motor Sport Council today approved changes to Articles 10.2 and 10.6 of the Formula One Sporting Regulations in order to provide the appointed tyre supplier additional opportunities to undertake testing in preparation for the 2017 season," confirmed a statement.
"The further testing was deemed to be essential for the purpose of developing the new tyre sizes permitted by the 2017 F1 Technical Regulations."
The Italian tyre supplier will be allowed a maximum of 25 days to test its 2017 tyres using current cars – this also applies to 2017 and 2018.
In addition, there will be an opportunity to test prototype 2017 tyres (in 2016 sizes) on 2013 or 2014 cars – the tests on older cars only apply in 2016.
