Helio Castroneves has secured pole position for the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, after an eventful qualifying session for the 80-lap race.
The Penske racer will be joined on the front row of the grid by reigning champion Scott Dixon, who initially ended the second segment fastest after a timing issue plagued proceedings.
During the second segment of the qualifying session it became apparent that the live timing system had failed, with various glitches appearing up and down the order.
Eventually the issue was rectified, with confusion on pit road as to who had progressed into the all-important Firestone Fast Six.
For the final segment the timing line was relocated to the back straight.
The second row of the grid will consist of championship leader Simon Pagenaud, who managed to improve during the final minutes of qualifying.
The Frenchman will start the race alongside former champion Tony Kanaan, who enjoyed a competitive qualifying hour for Ganassi Racing.
Juan Pablo Montoya could only manage fifth fastest for Penske, and will be joined on the third row by team-mate Will Power.
The Australian racer failed to produce a timed lap in the Firestone Fast Six, after causing a brief red flag delay after running straight on at Turn 9 and stalling his car whilst trying to perfect a u-turn to rejoin the action.
Despite managing to return to the pits after being restarted by the Holmatro Safety Team, Power elected against rejoining the action as his time would ultimately have been deleted after causing the red flag delay.
James Hinchcliffe qualified seventh, with the Canadian racer only just failing to progress into the Firestone Fast Six.
At first his team thought he had progressed through to the all-important final segment, however once the timing issue had been rectified and the correct data had been downloaded it was confirmed that Hinchcliffe had in fact just missed out.
Former Grand Prix of Long Beach race winner Takuma Sato will start from eighth, with Josef Newgarden and Carlos Munoz rounding out the top ten.
The weekend so far has been an intriguing affair, and the 80-lap race promises to be as frenetic as ever.
