McLaren and the FIA have confirmed that Fernando Alonso will not compete in this weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix following medical checks.
Reigning GP2 champion and McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne will replace the Spaniard at the Bahrain International Circuit.
Alonso was involved in a crash during the season opener in Australia. His car flipped over after contact with the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez.
“Two sets of chest CT scans were compared and it was decided that there was insufficient resolution of the signs to allow him to compete on safety grounds,” an FIA statement read.
“A repeat chest scan has been requested before the Chinese Grand prix and the results will be considered before allowing him to race there.”
McLaren then announced Vandoorne will replace Alonso for this weekend’s race, driving alongside Jenson Button.
NEWS: @svandoorne will deputise for @alo_oficial in the #BahrainGP following the @FIA doctors' decision.
