Prema Racing’s Pierre Gasly put in the quickest time on day two of GP2 pre-season 2016 testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
The French driver put in a 1:27.703 in the afternoon session to go quickest, finishing ahead of day one pace-setter Sergey Sirotkin. He ended the day over two tenths down on Gaslu.
Sirotkin’s best time was set in the morning, with Jordan King finishing second for Racing Engineering. He was third overall with a 1:28.093. His team-mate Norman Nato was fourth, with Raffaele Marciello fifth and Mitch Evans sixth.
The majority of drivers set their best times in the morning, despite cooler conditions. Sunny skies meant plenty of dry running was completed, while the soft tyres appeared on the afternoon, helping Gasly move to the top of the timesheets.
Rene Binder, Arthur Pic, Marvin Kirchhofer and Russian Time’s Artem Markelov completed the top 10. Luca Ghiotto, Nobuharu Matschushita, Daniel de Jong and Antonio Giovinazzi were next up.
Status Grand Prix appeared at the test, having missed out on running on day one. Sergio Canamasas returned to a GP2 car and was 15th, with Meindert van Buuren 23rd in the second car.
Gustav Malja, Oliver Rowland, Jimmy Eriksson, Sean Gelael and Trident’s Philo Paz Armand rounded out the top 20. Nabil Jeffri, Alex Lynn, van Buuren and Nicholas Latifi were the slowest drivers on day two.
There were several stoppages, with Giovinazzi, Markelov and Gelael all bringing out red flags in Spain. The latter two found themselves in the Turn 5 gravel trap in the afternoon session. The final day of the first pre-season test takes place on Friday.
