Formula 1’s 2016 pre-season testing in numbers

Formula 1 pre-season testing came to an end this week following eight intensive days of work for the drivers and teams at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, and all that's left now is for their equipment to be shipped to Australia and then the real business of racing can begin.

We've compiled some statistics from the two weeks of testing to give you an idea of how each team fared.

Fastest Laps/Most Laps by Driver

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was the quickest man at the first test, but team-mate Kimi Raikkonen took over that title after the second test, posting a lap time which would have seen him eclipse Nico Rosberg's pole time at the 2015 Spanish Grand Prix by 1.9 seconds.

That's a mighty impressive time, though it was somewhat helped by Pirelli's new Ultra-Soft compound. However, the cars are definitely quicker through natural evolution of both aerodyamics and the relatively new power units.

In fact 13 drivers posted times quicker than Rosberg's pole lap, and although set in warmer and therefore more advantageous conditions, there was little wind to contend with during testing which helped matters.

Lewis Hamilton meanwhile posted the most laps at 673, following by Rosberg at 656.

Most Laps Covered by Team

This is where Mercedes did show their hand and it's clear to see reliability isn't a concern. Mercedes completed 1,329 faultless laps – or 20 race distances if you like. The second best team, Toro Rosso, were more than 230 laps behind.

It wasn't such good news for Haas which after four days sat above both McLaren and Manor, however a difficult second test saw them drop to the back, covering less than a third of what Mercedes managed.

The total amount of laps covered during both tests, more than 25,942 miles, is further than one lap of the earth's equator.

Most Laps Completed by Power Unit

Once again, it's Mercedes at the top. A huge tally by the works team along with decent totals from its customers; Williams, Force India and Manor, mean the Anglo-German power unit completed more than 3,400 laps!

Ferrari's 2016 engine came in second as Sauber switched to running its new car – unlike during the opening four days when it ran its 2015 car. However Toro Rosso continued to use the older engine and will do so for the remainder of the season.

Renault were third with 1,596 laps as Honda, thanks to its deal to supply just one team, McLaren, managed just 707 laps.
