The Andretti Autosport team has announced it will field four cars in the IndyCar series in 2016, after merging with Bryan Herta Autosport.
The No.98 car will join Andretti’s existing entries and be run by the team, with crew from the Bryan Herta outfit moving across.
Michael Andretti’s team will run Carlos Munoz, Marco Andretti and Ryan Hunter-Reay in the 2016 IndyCar season, alongside Herta’s No.98 car.
The driver of the new fourth Honda-powered machine has yet to be announced. Herta ran a single car for Gabby Chaves last season, with the Colombian finishing 15th in his rookie campaign. He will not be driving the fourth Andretti car.
Herta, who won races with Andretti during his time driving in IndyCar, will remain involved in the team, working as a race strategist and driver coach. His car won the 2011 Indianapolis 500 with the late Dan Wheldon.
“Bryan is a long-time friend and I was happy to watch him build a successful Indy car team,” Michael Andretti said. "Bringing Bryan and his crew into the family is a great opportunity for all parties to build an even stronger organization.
“Having Bryan’s experience is a welcome addition to the team. I’m honoured to be able to carry on what he started and look forward to a competitive season.”
Herta added: “I couldn’t be more excited about this new chapter for Bryan Herta Autosport. When the opportunity came together for us to strengthen our organization and merge with one of the most successful teams and names in the sport, it was really a no brainer.
“I’m especially proud that what we’ve built with all the employees of BHA will remain intact and become part of the fabric of Andretti Autosport.”
