Daniel de Jong has been confirmed as MP Motorsport’s second and final driver for the 2016 GP2 season.
After several seasons racing in Formula Renault 2.0, the Dutch racer moved up to Formula Renault 3.5 and Auto GP in 2011, before making his GP2 debut for Rapax in 2012.
He switched to MP Motorsport for the 2013 season and remained at the team through 2014 and the majority of 2015. His best championship finish of 23rd was scored last year.
This was despite missing two rounds of the series after suffering broken vertebrae in a crash at Spa-Francorchamps. He returned for the final two events with Trident.
De Jong will return to GP2 for a fourth full season and will partner reigning FR3.5 champion and Renault Sport Academy member Oliver Rowland at MP.
"Last year, we began looking at what the future holds for us," he said. "We looked into LMP2 pretty seriously, and I did a test that really pleased me.
"But then I saw the WEC prototypes and GP2 race on the same weekend in Bahrain, and I thought: GP2 is such an amazing category, with cars battling throughout the entire field. That’s why I decided to stay in this hugely competitive championship for one more year before a possible switch to prototype racing.
"With Oliver as a team mate, we have a fantastic year ahead of us. He is so good and extremely motivated, and we’ve known each other for a long time. Everyone in the team is buzzing with enthusiasm and that feels really great."
