Mike Conway feels upbeat about Toyota’s prospects for the new FIA World Endurance Championship season after recently testing the 2016 TS050 Hybrid in Spain earlier this week.
Toyota endured a miserable campaign in 2015 as Audi and Porsche made significant progress over the winter, limiting the Japanese manufacturer to just two podium finishes across the course of the season.
However, Conway was cautiously optimistic when talking to Grand Prix Times about Toyota’s chances for the new campaign, saying that the feedback from testing so far has been positive.
“So far so good. We had a lot of time to find compared to our competition, but I think from first signs, I think we’re looking alright,” Conway said.
“Early days still. Obviously cautiously saying it’s looking OK. Much more than that really I can’t comment too much. I feel good about it.”
Conway flew straight from the test to Buenos Aires to make his Formula E debut on Saturday, where a late mistake cost him a top 10 finish for Venturi.
With both WEC and Formula E now to contend with, Conway doubts that he could also add a program in IndyCar in the near future as much as he may like to.
“The more you can drive the better as far as I’m concerned to learn different skills and different cars,” Conway said.
“It’s going to be fun mixing the two, keeping me really busy until July I suppose, then obviously WEC continues and then you’ve got to think about another year in FE. I think first things first get this weekend going and look forward.
“I love the IndyCar series and I would jump to get back into the car at any point, but with two programs, adding a third one… I don’t know, maybe.
“I’d say yeah, let’s do it, but so far no real plans to do that. Obviously I’d love to jump in one.”
