Reigning IndyCar champion Scott Dixon has expressed sincere praise of the spectacle of the Indianapolis 500, stating that no other sporting event comes close to the 200-lap event.
The Kiwi, who earlier in the week unveiled his retro 2016 Chip Ganassi Racing livery, has only won once around the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway back in 2008.
Despite his lack of success around the oval in comparison to other venues throughout the IndyCar calendar, Dixon still views the Indianapolis 500 with great affection as the iconic event prepares to host its centenary race this May.
“It’s hard to beat that fact of 100 years,” said Dixon. “There’s not too many, if any, sporting events around the world that have what they have here in Indianapolis.
“I’ve been very lucky to go to Olympic Games, World Cups and lots of other different major events around the world, and I’m going to be a little bit bias but nothing touches in the Indianapolis 500 and the month of May.
“Walking out of Gasoline Alley and seeing over 300,000 people in one place, it’s still the largest one-day sporting event in the world and it’s like nothing else on earth.”
Last season Dixon secured pole position for the Indianapolis 500, but was unable to translate it into victory and was instead forced to settle for fourth position.
