Webber labels Maldonado the worst, Vettel the best on current grid

Straight-talking former-Formula 1 driver Mark Webber believes Pastor Maldonado is "out of his depth" in F1 after branding the Venezuelan the worst driver on the current grid, but was full of praise for former Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel.

The Australian, speaking to Wheels magazine, was asked to give his opinion on the current grid, and whilst he ranks current World Champion Lewis Hamilton and McLaren's Fernando Alonso amongst the best, it's Vettel who comes out on top in the Porsche WEC driver's opinion.

"Lewis [Hamilton] has always been an incredibly fast, naturally gifted guy in all conditions and he’s very, very insensitive to tracks and to light rain and drizzle. It’s these sorts of things that makes the calibre of a very, very fast and phenomenal driver," explained Webber.

"Someone like Seb, he’s very good at the resources, at pulling the whole team together and getting everything around him and filling in his weaknesses. He’s exceptional on that front."

When asked to choose just one driver, he replied: "Those three [Vettel, Hamilton and Alonso] are on a very, very, high level. And if I had to pick one, I’d probably pick Sebastian, in terms of pulling the whole juggernaut together and getting the whole team going, which I think he will do at Ferrari shortly."

He didn't have such kind words for Renault's Maldonado, who he recently described as "undeserving" of his seat.

"Probably Maldonado," he said when asked who he ranked the worst driver. "He’s out of his depth and just shouldn’t be there. He’s making up the numbers basically."
