McLaren driver Jenson Button does not believe 2016’s new tyre regulations, which allow more freedom with compound selection, will make a difference to Formula 1.
Next season F1’s sole tyre supplier Pirelli will select three dry compounds from their range for every grand prix weekend, allowing each team to select two for use over the course of each event.
The move comes after widespread criticism of the ‘show’ and it’s hoped the change will spice up the action with teams and drivers possibly choosing different tyre strategies.
However Button believes that teams will eventually converge on the same strategy – as one will always be fastest – and the rule will simply be forgotten by the masses.
“Everyone will use the same tyre,” said Button. “Unless they have a massive issue with one tyre, everyone will use the same tyres.
“They have limited it,” he said. “If it was completely open and you could use any of the tyres available, then you might have the possibility of someone running something a bit different, a bit crazy.
“But you’re limited to three different tyres and everyone will be on exactly the same.
“After the first race, nobody will talk about it any more.”
