The FIA and Formula One Management are currently reviewing “exciting and innovative” changes, which could result in an overhaul to the grand prix weekend.
During Wednesday’s Strategy Group meeting, it was decided that the race weekend format should be looked at to see if it can be changed for the better.
“Several exciting and innovative changes to the qualifying and race weekend formats have been discussed,” confirmed the FIA’s statement on the matter.
“[These] are being evaluated by FIA and FOM for a 2016 introduction.”
No specific details were given as to what might change or what is being considered, but it’s believed shorter races, later start times, additional sprint races and a practice shakeup are amongst the potential proposals.
Journalist Will Buxton reported that FP3 could be replaced with a qualifying session to decide the grid for a one hour Saturday evening sprint race. The result of the sprint race would decide the grid for Sunday’s race.
