Vettel reckons points are possible from the back

Despite a day beset by problems that combined together mean he will start tomorrow’s Canadian Grand Prix from the back, Sebastian Vettel remains upbeat about his chances of a good result in tomorrow’s race.

Problems with his power unit meant that Vettel sat out much of the first qualifying session, and when he did appear late on in it the problem wasn’t totally fixed and as a result his best time wasn’t good enough to progress from Q1.

It was later made even worse for him as he was handed a five-place grid penalty for passing Roberto Mehri under a red flag in the Saturday morning practice session.

But given the strong pace that he had shown earlier in the weekend, along with that of his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, Vettel was nevertheless confident of progress in tomorrow’s race.

“We have plenty of tyres and anything can happen” he said. “We have a strong car and a strong pace, so I should be able to score good points.”

On those technical problems in qualifying Vettel said: “Right from the start we didn’t have the full power available, so when I went out for the first run we tried to fix the problem, but we couldn’t. Due to the lack of power we couldn’t make it further.”

He also added that he hoped at least to make it out of Q1 in order to give the team more time to fix the problem.

“For sure we have to investigate but I don’t think that there’s anything to do with the engine. I think it has more to do with the electronical side, but I am confident that we can fix the problem in time for tomorrow’s race.”
