Formula 1 cars must be scary to drive urges Vettel

Formula 1 cars are no longer scary to drive according to Sebastian Vettel, and that’s something that needs to change in the future according to the four-time champion.

His comments come amid dramatic changes planned for the sport in 2017, which will see more downforce, bigger tyres, and louder engines as well as changes to the way the cars look.

It’s important for Vettel that they be difficult to drive and scary, like they were when he first tested an F1 car.

“The first time I drove an F1 car I was scared and I don’t think you get that any more,” said the Ferrari driver.

“It is still difficult to drive fast but probably back in the years you needed a little bit bigger balls.

“That is what the drivers would appreciate – and the fans, so it looks more spectacular.”

The German backs the proposed changes, but wants the sport to go even further with the re-introduction of larger engines, such as the V10’s used prior to 2006.

“I would like to have a much bigger engine, more power, better tyres, more grip so the cars car faster in general,” he added.

However, it was agreed that the current hybrid-V6 would remain going forward, but with natural development, it’s likely they will produce more than 1,000bhp by 2017, making them some of the most powerful engines used in F1.
