Lewis Hamilton only relinquished the lead once during his pit stop before swiftly retaking the lead to win the Australian Grand Prix.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton got his championship defence off to the best possible start by claiming victory at the first race of the season, beating out team-mate Nico Rosberg, though whilst the German never really challenged for the win, he never dropped too far back.

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel claimed the final podium step by jumping Williams’ Felipe Massa during the stops. The Brazilian eventually settling for fourth place.

Felipe Nasr shocked to take fifth for Sauber, scoring 10 points on his debut for the Swiss team which failed to score a single point last season. His team-mate Marcus Ericsson was also the points after finishing eighth.

Daniel Ricciardo was sixth, whilst his Red Bull team-mate was among a handful of non-starters which also included Kevin Magnussen and Valtteri Bottas.

Kvyat suffered gearbox troubles on his way to the grid, whilst engine trouble halted Magnussen. Bottas failed to start due to back pain.

The race saw one safety car thanks to a Nasr, Kimi Raikkonen and Pastor Maldonado clash at the very start, ending the latter’s race whilst a loose wheel ended the Finn’s later in the race.

McLaren’s Jenson Button managed to finish the race despite a crash with Sergio Perez, both taking their cars to the finish.
