McLaren’s former team principal Martin Whitmarsh is due to make a return to the public eye according to the Daily Telegraph which claims he is to join Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup sailing team.
Whitmarsh left McLaren at the start of the 2014 season following disappointing results and has remained off the radar since.
He will reportedly take up the role of CEO, reporting to Ainslie. Another F1 figure is also involved in the project following a consultancy deal with Red Bull Technologies and Adrian Newey who will be involved in designing the yacht.
“Formula 1 is a sport that can take over your life, it can consume you,” Whitmarsh told the newspaper. “And I think it got pretty close to doing that with me.
“But I know I’m a lucky, lucky man. I had an amazing 25 years and never have to work again if I don’t want to.
“Whatever I do now should be because I want to do something fresh.”
