Fernando Alonso has revealed that he has signed a long-term deal with a new team, but failed to confirm exactly which team.
It’s widely expected that the Spaniard will join McLaren for the 2015 season, but many expected him to sign a short-term deal in an effort to move to Mercedes or Red Bull in the future.
However if the rumours turn out to be true, then Alonso’s admission shows he’s committed to making the McLaren-Honda project a success.
“It’s time to look to the future with optimism and prepare for 2015 in a better way,” Alonso said after finishing his last Ferrari race in ninth.
“We need to see how things go for everyone next year. Mercedes definitely have a big advantage and they will probably carry this advantage into next year.
“But I will join a project that is not for next year only, it is a long-term relationship and it is a project which will hopefully challenge Mercedes soon and this is why I have made this decision.
“I am looking forward to the future with enthusiasm because when you join a new project it is because you think it is better,” he added.
Meanwhile a close friend of Alonso, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, let slip that Alonso will soon arrive in Woking. When the two-time champion was asked about the former King’s comments, he said: “What the king says I cannot go against. The king is the king. He is always right.”
