Nico Rosberg set the benchmark time in the opening practice session for the British Grand Prix on Friday morning in Silverstone.

The Mercedes driver’s lap of 1:35.424 was over seven tenths quicker than team-mate Lewis Hamilton could manage in second, whilst Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso was a further tenth back.

Daniel Ricciardo split the Ferraris as Kimi Raikkonen finished fifth fastest, over a second slower.

The session was fairly eventful with Pastor Maldonado the first to hit trouble. The Lotus driver stopped at the exit of the pitlane and was told to “shut the engine off” by his engineer.

He completed just two out laps before jumping out of the car and calling it a day.

Susie Wolff was next. The Scottish woman’s debut came to an abrupt end when she reported a loss of oil pressure and pulled off the circuit after just four laps.

Her team-mate Felipe Massa crashed at Stowe after running wide. The incident mirrored that of a crash he had at Silverstone last year when he drove for Ferrari – it also brought out the red flags.

Marcus Ericsson was next. The Caterham man span and beached his car, bringing out the yellow flags as the marshals tried desperately to free him.
