Nico Rosberg secured victory on Formula 1’s return to Austria to once again extend his championship lead to 29 points over team-mate Lewis Hamilton who finished second.

The German ended up just 1.9 seconds ahead as they crossed the line, with both struggling to manage overheating brakes.

Third place went to Williams’s Valtteri Bottas as he secured his first podium finish, whilst pole man Felipe Massa could only hold onto fourth, narrowly keeping Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso behind.

Sergio Perez took sixth ahead of Kevin Magnussen and the sole remaining Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo as Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Kvyat and Jean-Eric Vergne all retired from their home race.

Nico Hulkenberg and Kimi Raikkonen completed the top ten.

It was Hamilton’s opening lap which got him to the front as he went from ninth to fourth in under a lap, later passing both Williams later in the race.

However two slow stops meant he was unable to challenge Rosberg for the win.

Esteban Gutierrez was penalised for an unsafe release with a ten-second stop/go penalty and finished 19th behind Marcus Ericsson’s Caterham.
