Ferrari rubbish Montezemolo’s threat to quit F1

Ferrari have denied reports which suggested president Luca di Montezemolo had hinted that the Italian marque is set to quit Formula 1.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the 66-year-old stated that “Formula 1 isn’t working” and blamed a decline in the viewing numbers on the FIA which have “forgotten that people watch the racing for the excitement” not for the “efficiency”.

With rumours abound that Ferrari are working on an LMP1 endurance project, Di Montezemolo added: “Of course we cannot do sports-car racing and F1. It’s not possible.”

That led to speculation surrounding the teams future in F1, but Ferrari have denied the reports, even suggesting they could run the two projects side-by-side.

“Some elements of the media have suggested Ferrari would quit Formula 1 to concentrate on the Le Mans 24 Hours and Endurance racing,” said the Scuderia.

“This is a bit of a stretch based on President Luca di Montezemolo reiterating that Formula 1 needs to evolve and renew itself, while also admitting that there is a unique attraction to the 24 Hour race.

“To say that after 2020, Ferrari could quit Formula 1 to concentrate on Le Mans and the Endurance championship takes his words to extremes.

“Plus of course, there’s nothing to stop Ferrari upping the ante and competing in both disciplines. So it’s just pure speculation.”
