Ferrari and Renault will need to have done an ‘exceptional job’ between Monaco and Canada if they’re going to be able to stay with Mercedes on the straights according to Lewis Hamilton.
The Briton is confident his Mercedes engine will provide him a huge advantage around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve which is essentially four-long straights with several slow corners which benefits straight-line speed and traction, both areas in which Mercedes excels.
When asked if the long straights would help their rivals catch up, he replied: “I would be guessing but I don’t feel that would be the case.
“We’re particularly strong on the straights, Mercedes are,” he added.
“But I don’t know, maybe we’ll be surprised this weekend. But long straights do suit us very well, we have very good power curve on our engine, Mercedes has done the best job with the engines.
“So Renault and Ferrari will have to have done an exceptional job coming into this weekend, in terms of that area, to be able to keep up with us on the straights.”
Felipe Massa, whose Williams is also powered by the same engine, agrees with Hamilton’s assessment.
“Definitely it can be a good track for most of the cars that are using Mercedes,” he said.
“So I think maybe we see even a big difference compared to Mercedes and the other teams because, as Lewis said, the engine is amazing. It was a very good job done by Mercedes and they have a good car in braking and everything so for sure maybe we can see even a big difference.”
