Honda aren’t interested in buying a stake in the McLaren F1 team according to a team spokesman who commented on the recent speculation.

Reports doing the rounds in Monaco suggested the Japanese car manufacturer is not only looking to supply McLaren with engines next season, but also take an ownership stake in the outfit.

However, a spokesman denied the reports and said Honda’s focus remains on developing a competitive hybrid-V6 engine for 2015.

“Contrary to recent media reports, Honda has informed us it has no intention to buy into McLaren.

“All of Honda’s focus is on the development of its new Formula 1 power unit,” it added.

However more credible reports suggest Honda is evaluating investment in a smaller team, such as Caterham or Sauber, in an effort to start a ‘B’ team for development purposes.

It’s even been suggested that they may bring back the Super Aguri moniker which has close ties to Honda and recently joined Formula E.
