Former Ferrari mechanic, who was involved in the ‘spygate’ saga of 2007, has died in a road traffic accident.
Kent Police confirmed a 56-year-old man was involved in an accident during the early hours of Friday morning.
A statement from PC Glen Braidwood gave further details about the incident: “A silver VW caddy van, driven by a 56 year-old man from the Essex area, had stopped on the hard shoulder of the M20 Londonbound carriageway at Ashford.
“For reasons yet to be established, the man appears to have entered the carriageway and was then in collision with an articulated goods vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
Stepney left F1 in 2007 when he was accused of sharing sensitive data with McLaren’s Mike Coughlan. Before that he worked with Shadow, Lotus and Benetton.
Following his departure from F1, he worked in sportscars with JRM.
