Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he will re-use his Australian Grand Prix power unit in Malaysia, despite it forcing him to retire after just two laps.
The Briton suffered a cylinder failure before the start of the race which meant his car was down on power, explaining why he fell down the field at the start before the team called him in to retire.
Mercedes hoped to fix the engine, as drivers are limited to just five this season before incurring a grid penalty.
Hamilton says they’ll re-install the unit for first practice to analyse whether the issue has been fixed, but wasn’t sure whether or not they’ll use the unit in the race.
“I’m told that we are going to start with the engine we had in the last race ready to do some laps with that,” he said on Thursday.
“But whether or not I will do the [full] race weekend on that engine, I don’t know.”
